Stephen Johansen joins Speedworks as they make their debut in the VW CUP

Former Funcup and VAG Trophy racer Stephen Johansen announced today that he would make the step up to the VW Racing Cup in 2017 as well as switching teams as he enters his VW Polo R into the championship with BTCC team Speedworks Motorsport.
Having been successful in a rear wheel drive Funcup car for over eight years, Johansen decided to take a new challenge and swap to front wheel drive in the VAG Trophy in 2016 with a highest placed finish of 2nd place at Oulton Park. After dipping his toe in a few rounds of the VW Cup in 2016, he decided it was the place to be with its higher calibre drivers and increased presence on the British GT rounds.
Johansen and Speedworks Team Principal Christian Dick have been friends for years and following a solid season with Warwickshire based PMR, Johansen decided it was time to move his VW Polo R closer to home and into the workshops of Speedworks Motorsport. Speedworks Motorsport has a strong reputation having competed successfully in a number of top flight championships including the BTCC and have recently branched out into the fledgling LMP3 Championship.
Stephen Johansen commented, “I’m obviously very excited to be racing in the VW Cup for 2017, I had a good run in the VAG Trophy in 2016 but I’m ready to make the step up this season and race alongside some of the best up and coming drivers in the UK.”
Johansen continues, “Moving the VW Polo R from PMR was a hard decision to make, they have built a fantastic car but I’ve known Christian for years and have a great relationship with Speedworks, they run a very tight ship, operate in many championships plus they are just down the road in Northwich, so I can keep popping in to bother them!”
Christian Dick, Team Principal, Speedworks Motorsport commented, “We’re thrilled to have Stephen on board and to be running his VW Polo R in the VW Cup for 2017. Stephen is a very talented driver and to get our hands on the VW Polo R and run it with Stephen in the UK’s leading VW Championship is very exciting!”
Stewart Lines, the VW Cup Series Owner commented, “It is great news for the VW Cup to welcome Stephen Johansen, his VW Polo R and Speedworks to the championship. I know Christian and his team will put out an immaculate car and Stephen is a top class so it should be a very exciting mix. Plus it is further proof that the Championship is going from strength to strength and attracting the highest calibre of teams, cars and drivers.”
Johansen has also confirmed he will continue with his Spa 25 Hours Funcup drive for 2017 as well as his duties an A Grade ARDS instructor. In addition, Johansen is also Managing Director of the hugely successful Indigo Technology Services who provide an all-inclusive range of networking solutions for key corporate clients and major UK festivals.
The VW Racing Cup will support the British GT Championship for 2017 and kicks off on the Bank Holiday weekend of the 14th-16th April at Johansen’s home circuit of Oulton Park. TV coverage can be found on Channel 4 and Motors TV.
